What is 4-H Tropicana?
4-H Tropicana is a school curriculum in public speaking. The program is a partnership with Tropicana, Inc; Hillsborough County Extension 4-H and the Hillsborough County Public Schools. This partnership started in 1969. Our first contest was held at the Plant City Holiday Inn with 50 students participating. in 2006 we had over 77 schools and 15,000 students!
The program in the public schools is offered to elementary students in 4th and 5th grades. Schools register their classes in September. Materials are sent to the Assistant Vice Principles which include curriculum guides and contest information.
Students write and deliver a public speak between 2-3 minutes in length on any topic. They compete within the classroom and as a school. Then the schools compete against each other at area contests in April and May. The top two winners at the area contests then compete at the District finals in May.
Private schools may participate, but only at their school level.
